Living on Oahu, Grace Towle knows all the best places where locals go.

Nestled between the former plantation towns of La’ie and Kahuku on the northeastern shore of Oʻahu, Malaekahana Bay Beach is a local favorite getaway. The white sands stretch for almost one mile and the tropical turquoise waters cater to many island activities. Pine trees envelope this bay spot making it a perfect location for camping. If you need a quiet overnight getaway, Malaekahana awaits. (Reservations required).

Water Sports

It’s a wonder why this gem of a beach is largely unknown amongst tourists. Snorkeling, swimming, body boarding, surfing are some of the most enjoyable ways to spend the sunlit hours. As always, it is a good idea to confirm the surf conditions ahead of time, which will require an online check since there are no lifeguards on duty.

Shade

The bay is surrounded by an abundance of pine trees, which provide a reprieve from the beach sun, but also create the perfect ambiance for the camping enthusiast.

Food

There are no food options at the beach, so bring snacks or stop by for some shrimp or local fare at one of the food trucks along the way.

Directions and Parking

Ample parking space is available.

Wildlife Potential

If you are a strong swimmer or you have a paddle board and/or body board, be sure to wear some reef shoes and venture out to Goat Island, aka Mokuauia Island. Though you will not spot any goats, you will uncover yet another treasure in Oahu. The views are spectacular and you just might encounter a native green turtle.
