The emerald ridges of the Ko‘olau Mountains on Oahu’s Windward Side provide photogenic shelter for lush Kualoa Valley, once the home of Hawaiʻian chiefs, and the adjacent valleys of Ka‘a‘awa (kah-ah-ah-vah) and Hakipu‘u (hah-key-poo-ooh). Now those oceanside valleys provide fertile ground for exploring 4,000-acre, family-owned Kualoa Ranch, a dramatic backdrop in “Jurassic Park,” “Hawaiʻi Five-O,” “Lost” and many more productions. It’s still a working cattle and sheep ranch, with a farm, fishpond and beach known as “Secret Island.”
While you can tour Kualoa Ranch by ATV, horseback, electric bike, catamaran, kayak, Jeep, school bus or zip line (did I miss any?!), its vast size means you’d never guess 1,500 folks a day come here. You can also book combo excursions that include a buffet lunch, or add on shuttle transfers from Waikiki. It’s well worth leaving the beach for a day.
