Reef-Safe (Coral-Friendly) Sunscreen

A good sunscreen is mandatory in the tropics and we are learning more and more about how certain chemicals we use are damaging the oceans. Turns out the many chemicals in our sunscreens are no different, and can be toxic to the same reefs we hope to enjoy — especially when there are many people frequenting the same snorkel sites. These chemicals, to name a few, kill corals: Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, Parabenes, Triclosan, and Benzene. Coral reefs are important not only as homes to many awesome marine species, but also absorb large amounts atmospheric CO2. The good news, many new reef friendly sunscreens are now on the market.
