Kauai, known as the Garden Isle, is the northernmost and geographically oldest of the main Hawaiian islands. Formed by the eruption of the now-extinct volcano Waialeale about 5 million years ago, the island has gently eroded into gorgeous sandy beaches covering half its perimeter. Other highlights include the Napali Coast’s towering sea cliffs and deep valleys, inaccessible by car, and the red and ochre walls of Waimea Canyon, hailed as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The North Shore is a series of valleys and stunning beaches connected by one-lane bridges, while the Coconut Coast (East Side) brims with shopping, dining and of course coconut palms. The sunny South Shore offers the best conditions in winter but is appealing year-round.
