Kauai has beaches for all levels of surfing. For beginners, the best places to learn to surf are Kalapaki Beach and Kealia Beach on the East side. Hanalei Bay on the North Shore offers experienced surfers large waves, and at the same time, beginners can practice in smaller waves on the sandy beach breaks by the Hanalei Pier or at the Waipa River mouth.
If you are an avid surfer, check the surf report, the conditions in Kauai change fast and the waves can alter size significantly in a matter of minutes.
Many local companies offer surf lessons. If you are in Hanalei, a great choice is Hanalei Surf School, where you can also get private instruction from pro surfers like local legend Evan Valiere.
During the summer months, Poipu Beach on the South Shore has great breaks for surfing and the shallow beach break at Shipwrecks beach is mostly a spot to bodyboard.
