Keep in mind that Kauai can be wild and dangerous, as the second rainiest place on the planet, the weather conditions can change fast and unpredictably. The best beaches for families are located in the lifeguarded beach parks. There are ten lifeguarded beaches in Kauai.
On the North Shore, there are lifeguard towers at Ke’e Beach, Haena Beach Park, Waioli Beach a.k.a Pinetrees and Pavillions Beach Park in Hanalei Bay.
All the beach parks have bathroom facilities, outdoor showers, picnic grounds and free parking lots. No animals are allowed on the parks, but they are allowed on the beach.
One of the most family friendly beaches on the East side is Lydgate Beach Park. There is a large salt-water pool shielded by a lava rock wall called Lydgate Pond, that’s a popular snorkeling and safe swimming place for children.
On the West side, Salt Pond Beach Park is located near the picturesque town of Hanapepe. It is an ideal setting to relax, fish, snack and swim on the protected shallow tide pools.
Kauai South Shore is home to Poipu Beach, “America’s Best Beach” voted by The Travel Channel. The beach is split into two smaller bays by a sandbar, with the protected Baby Beach cove to one side, and Poipu beach on the other. Great place to practice various activities from swimming and snorkeling to boogie boarding and surfing.
