Yes this seems to be an unlikely place to find the gravesite of such a famous American cultural hero. The location is rustic, remote and probably hasn’t changed much since his body was buried here in August of 1974. It is in a yard, under the shade of a Java plum tree, near a limestone coral church, built in 1857. I also like the the fun fact that the tiny church is notable for its window painting of a Polynesian Christ draped in the red-and-yellow feather capes that were reserved for Hawaiʻi’s highest chiefs. Why not? right.
What:
A modest granite gravestone surround by lava rocks, designed by Charles Lindbergh himself. The he chose the epitath, from Psalms 139:9, which reads. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…C.A.L.’
Details:
In the grounds of the Palapala Ho’omau Church, 8 miles south of Hana on the ocean side of the highway. Look for a sign for Maui Stables just past Mile Marker #41 and turn onto a small dirt road that leads to the church.
