San Francisco’s Western Seashore: Ocean Beach

You know it’s a hot day in San Francisco when the crowds convene at Ocean Beach. Normally, however, this perpetually chilly expanse of sand is the ideal place for those looking to skip the tourists and head straight for the surf. Located on the westernmost border of San Francisco, Ocean Beach is a true local’s paradise. Occupying a 3.5-mile stretch of pristine California coastline, the white sands of Ocean Beach provide an ideal backdrop for flying kites and leisurely strolls. While only the most experienced surfers will want to test the hazardous currents, Ocean Beach is also beloved by Bay Area hikers as the natural payoff to several breathtaking paths available to explore in the vicinity.

Water Sports

Even if the prospect of surfing the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean happens to appeal, you’ll want to be sure you have sufficient experience before testing the strong tides and unpredictable currents of Ocean Beach. By extension, swimming is highly discouraged — even wading can pose a risk because of the area’s infamous rip tides. Instead, make the most of your time on the sand by flying kites, building sandcastles and tucking into your backlog of reading material.

Shade

Barring the odd exceptionally warm day, it’s likely shade won’t be top of mind during your visit to Ocean beach. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come prepared! As a result of Ocean Beach’s steady stream of fog, it can be easy to forget that your skin still needs protection from harmful UV rays. Be sure to bring a standing umbrella and enough sunscreen to keep your skin happy during your day out as there’s nothing but sand awaiting you here.

Wildlife

Birdwatchers will want to keep an eye out for the Western Snowy Plover. Recognized as a threatened species, the Western Snowy Plover makes its winter home in California, including sightings at Ocean Beach and its surrounding shoreline. Where to Eat & Drink

Packing a picnic is the way to go for Ocean Beach, where locating amenities will likely require a long walk, if not a short drive. However, there are still a few options nearby to check out.

Seal Rock Inn

On the northern end of Ocean Beach at the Seal Rock Inn, the landmark Cliff House restaurant (currently closed) is expected to reopen before the end of 2025.

Beach Chalet

Other options include the charming auspices of the Beach Chalet, serving a full menu of breakfast through dinner and even offering happy hour.

Java Beach at the Zoo

Near the southern end, you’ll find hot coffee and café treats at Java Beach at the Zoo, located, as its name implies, across the street from the San Francisco Zoo.

Directions and Parking

If arriving by car, you’ll find abundant parking courtesy of multiple free lots at Ocean Beach (located at the southern end at Sloat Blvd., across from the Beach Chalet, and near the northern end by the Cliff House) as well as available street parking on the Great Highway itself. Owing to the ongoing closure of the Great Highway to vehicular traffic, visitors are advised to check for the latest updates when making plans to park at Ocean Beach. Additionally, those wishing to reach the area by public transit can do so via Muni streetcar (either the N-Judah or L-Taraval line) and Muni’s 38 Geary bus (towards Cliff House).
