A Buzzing City Beach: Baker Beach, San Francisco

By far the busiest stretch of sand in all of San Francisco, Baker Beach is a bustling weekend destination thanks to its convenient location, bountiful amenities, and jaw-dropping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. A popular spot for birthday parties, picnics, and canine get-togethers, it’s always a sight to see the entire expanse of Baker Beach full and buzzing with beachgoers. Even better, a day here is also easily complimented with any number of exciting nearby activities found within the Presidio: a 1500-acre national park site (including Baker Beach) currently overseen by the Presidio Trust of San Francisco. Ready for a major workout? Head to the north end of Baker Beach and attempt to scramble up the mighty Sand Ladder!

Water Sports

While swimming is permitted here, extreme caution is always warranted owing to the water’s low temperatures and strong currents. Additionally, at the beach’s most northern end, don’t be surprised if you find a few brave guests enjoying their day in the nude.

Shade

As is common for all San Francisco beaches, you’ll need to come prepared if you desire shade. While Baker Beach’s proximity to other attractions in the Presidio offers the option to seek shelter as needed, bringing what you need is absolutely the best way to ensure an ideal day out. The same goes for your beloved pups if you chose to bring your furry friends to this dog-friendly (must be on leash) beach.

Wildlife

At Baker Beach, there’s wildlife everywhere! From the starfish that emerge at low tide to the flocks of Brown Pelicans that often streak across the sky, it’s seemingly always a good day to have a pair of binoculars handy. Get lucky and you must just see a Red-tailed Hawk or perhaps spot a pod of dolphins or a harbor seal out in the waters!

Where to Eat & Drink

Be warned: if you don’t come to Baker Beach with picnic supplies or something to grill, you’re likely to grow envious of your neighbors in no time. Indeed, the aromas of delicious food can often be caught wafting by — which also doubles a reminder to arrive early if you hope to snag one of the beach’s coveted first-come, first-served grilling sites.

Directions and Parking

Baker Beach has free parking available on either end of the beach. The larger lot is on the north side on Battery Chamberlin Road, while a smaller lot on the south end can be found on Gibson Road. Owing to Baker Beach’s popularity on the weekends, especially on sunny days, you’ll want to arrive early to avoid waiting for a space to open. For a public transit alternative, take the Muni 29 Sunset bus or the Presidio GO Shuttle if already elsewhere in the park.
