Yhere are many family-friendly beaches on Oahu.  In town, Waikiki Beach is generally calm with some break waters that create safe lagoons in case the surf is up. It draws a crowd for a reason with picturesque views of Diamond Head, chair and umbrella rentals, with a plethora of restaurants and shopping steps away. Just north of Waikiki is Ala Moana Beach Park with a long stretch of sandy beach, a large breakwater, a big grassy park, and a private lagoon called Magic Island.

To the South East is Waimanalo, a long and gorgeous white sand beach. The water is an amazing shade of blue, and you can find some quiet and serene space on this expansive stretch of beach. Just around the corner from Waimanalo is Lanikai, which is often one of the top-rated beaches in the world. It is beautiful and usually has calm waters and good spots for snorkeling, making it a perfect family-friendly beach on Oahu. Parking here can be challenging for visitors, so unless you don’t mind walking from the Kailua Beach Parking Lot, or have an “in” let’s leave Lanikai to the locals. Kailua Beach Park has easy ocean access, public restrooms, plenty of parking and showers.

The West Side has Ko’Olina, this resort has a private lagoon and break water which is ideal for the kids; it is a safe and protected spot for swimming and snorkeling. During the summer months, the North Shore has tranquil ocean waters, Waimea Bay being the favorite with great snorkeling, picturesque views, and a big rock for cliff jumping into the ocean. Turtle Bay has a private lagoon that provides safe ocean access even during the high surf of the winter months.

Kailua Beach

526 Kawailoa Rd, Kailua

Kailua Beach is 2.5 miles of soft white sand and warm turquoise waters. Park on the south end at Kailua beach park and set up shop anywhere along the sandy shore. The east side is the windward side of the island, so expect to see plenty of kiteboarders, windsurfers, and wing foilers darting across the bay. Due to a large reef that boarders this beach, the water is calm and friendly, making it a great family-friendly beach on Oahu.

Waikiki Beach

Kalākaua Ave, Honolulu

Made up of 5 different beaches, check out our Waikiki Beach breakdown, this shoreline borders the bustling streets of Waikiki and is known for its gentle and welcoming waters and sandy beaches. With plenty of access to activities, set up surf lessons, rent paddle boards, or even make a reservation for a sunset cruise on one of the famous catamarans. Despite a heavier crowd, there is always a spot to set up. An extra bonus of these beaches is the proximity to refreshing snacks and beverages.

Ko Olina Lagoons

Ulua Lagoon, Kapolei

Probably the safest place for swimming on the island, the Ko Olina lagoons are man-made coves along the small stretch of Oahu’s West side known as Ko Olina. Each one is protected from large swells or wind, so kids can snorkel and swim peacefully as parents relax on the beach. Accessible and less crowded than the beaches of Waikiki, soak up the sun, and don’t forget to stop by the Ko Olina shops for a tasty pre or post-beach day meal.

The sandy shoreline is equipped with lounge chairs and umbrellas, while a few people enjoy the surf. Behind the beach lies a lush, green area adorned with palm trees and nestled buildings.

Turtle Bay East Beach

On the East side of the Turtle Bay Resort is a protected beach that offers snorkeling, swimming, and umbrellas for rent. Despite the big winter swells a reef keeps this cove calm and is known as a frequented spot by green sea turtles, which is an entertaining sight at this family-friendly beach on Oahu. Check out the Jamie O’Brien Surf School on the west side beach to get active with expert instructors who teach surf lessons for all levels.
