After two decades of visiting Hawaii as a travel writer and wife of a triathlete, Jeanne now shares news and views of the islands from her home base on the Kohala Coast.

Packed on the little island of paradise that is Maui, there are plenty of experiences to indulge and new things to learn about. Maui’s North Side, East Side and Central region have especially a lot to offer — from taro to music, here are some of the best annual events to check out.

January

Let your kids embrace their inner surfer at the Annual Pā‘ia Bay BEACHFEST showcase for young bodyboarders and surfers. The event will be complete with special guests and judges, live music and an awards ceremony at sunset.  

February

The Maui Open Studios annual art extravaganza is customizable to region, timing and location. Partake in the self-guided tours of studios and exhibitions, and get to know the artists behind them.

April

There’s plenty to do at the East Maui Taro Festival, and you and your family or friends won’t want to miss out. Peruse the Farmer’s Market and variety of food booths, or watch a hula performance while enjoying the live music.

May

Pick up a souvenir (or several) at the renowned Seabury Hall Craft Fair. There’s typically also a selection of food, so you can snack on something while perusing the fair. And it’s a school fundraiser, so you know you’re supporting a good cause.

October

Family fun at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center for the Maui Ukulele Festival in Kahului includes made-in-Hawaii arts and crafts and ‘ono-licious island foods and free music throughout the day. Bring your own beach chairs and sunscreen to lounge and listen to the musicians at this 17th annual event.

November

Get your steps in and your holiday shopping done early at the 11th annual Hawaiian Airlines Maui County Festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. More than 140 artists, artisans and chefs from Maui, Lanai and Molokai — the populated islands of Maui County — will sell their wares at the two-day event. Entry on Friday, Nov. 1,  costs $45, while it’s just $5 the following day (free for ages 12 and under both days.)

A collaboration between Momentum Dance Maui and Maui OnStage, Nutcracker Sweets is a great way to get into the holiday spirit and celebrate a Christmas classic. All ages are welcome.
