For years I have looked for an audio tour of the petroglyph fields of the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, once home to a thriving community. These native Hawaiians left their stories etched in the jet black lava and stones found throughout the area. For guests staying at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii, members of the Hui Holokai Beach Club Program will guide them on the lava footpaths traveled by the early Hawaiians, as they share the stories, lore and history of Kalahuipuaa, “the gathering place.”
What to Expect
Throughout the walk, you will see early Hawaiian lava caves which served as homes, pictorial petroglyphs (lava etchings) and sacred ahu (shrines) all telling the story of the former residents. The hike will also venture inland fishponds once reserved for alii (royalty), along oceanfront trails, and more.
