Fairmont Orchid
Two people relax by a tropical resort's large pool surrounded by lush greenery and palm trees. The main building of the best oceanfront hotel on the Big Island, Hawaii, is visible in the background, with poolside lounge chairs and umbrellas placed around the water. It’s a sunny day, creating a serene vacation atmosphere.

Fairmont Orchid
Kohala Coast, Hawaii

I first came to this property when it opened as a Ritz-Carlton (which means it has good bones) in 1990. What I loved about it then still exists today: beautiful sheltered beach for little swimmers, and snorkeling, a huge pool with lots of room for swogging (swim jogging) and great walking paths along the ocean. And according to the numerous awards from Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure, I’m not the only one who thinks Fairmont has done an excellent job managing this 540-room resort set on 32 oceanfront acres. There area plenty of on-site activities available such as SUP, golf, play tennis and of course, my favorite feature- the award-winning spa.
