Volcano House
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Adventurers, artists, writers — like Mark Twain — and scientists continue to be fascinated by the land where the Volcano House rests. From 1846 when it was first built as a one-room grass shelter to its current status, the Volcano House has a unique history as Hawaiʻi’s oldest hotel. While many additions and changes have been made to the main hotel over the years, including a major reconstruction in 2012 which resulted in the addition of the Crater View rooms, the rich history of its origin, deeply-rooted sense of place, and island hospitality continues to carry the hotel into the future. Volcano House offers 33 guest rooms that feature rustic island décor, daily housekeeping and WiFi. Select rooms offer volcano views of Halemaumau Crater at the rim of Kilauea caldera or views of the lush foliage on the park grounds. For the more adventurous types, just three miles beyond the Volcano House is one of the most spectacular campsites — nestled amidst a fragrant eucalyptus grove, 4,000 feet above sea level, the historic Namakanipaio Campground offers a rustic, one-of-a-kind camping experience within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. There are three options: one is to stay in one of 10 Camper Cabins, to rent a tent, or bring your own. Visitors have use of the community campground facilities, which includes a refurbished bathroom.
