Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Ever since its groundbreaking in 1988, the Grand Wailea has been the must-see property in Wailea. The development concept was to create a detached world where guests can free themselves from their daily routine. The open-air lobby features nine larger than life (literally) Fernando Botero sculptures, which combined are worth more than $30 million, free Wi-Fi and plenty of ocean views. Subtlety is not what The Grand is about; the amusement-park-quality water slides are an irresistible kid magnet, and for adults the Spa Grande is decadence at its finest. With over 780 rooms and 120 luxury town homes, the scale is très grand. This is the type of resort where you need to get up early to stake your lounge chairs — it’s a party atmosphere by the pool, but you can always find a quiet spot on the beach or hammock.

Hana-Maui Resort by Hyatt

Hana-Maui Resort

The property itself has been around since 1970, and is currently managed by Hyatt. Unlike many destinations in Maui, Hana was not created for tourism, it’s a real town hence its tagline “Real Hawaii.” Long considered one of the most remarkable resorts in Hawaii, Hana Maui Resort (formerly known as Travaasa Hana and Hotel Hana Maui) is now even better. In fact, it was voted the “No. 1 Boutique Hotel” and the “No. 1 Experiential Retreat” in the Hawaiʻi Magazine 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards. This unique hotel with quaint cottages distinguishes itself by being secluded from the hustle and bustle of more tourist-like areas while keeping up its award-winning reputation. Apart from the resort’s many awards, Travaasa Hana’s other noteworthy factors include its adventure packages including guided horseback rides, hang gliding rides, snorkeling excursions, stand up paddle boarding and outrigger canoeing.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa

A luxe lodging choice on the south end of Ka’anapali, the Hyatt Regency Maui was built in 1980 and is popular with families, newlyweds as well as corporate groups. There’s room for everyone at this 40-acre property, comprised of three towers — Napili, Lahaina and Atrium — two pools, seven restaurants, three lounges, a fitness center and the only oceanfront spa on the island. Highlights for kids include a walk-in pool (as in soft, sandy bottom) with slide, exotic birds found throughout the property, and a penguin feeding time. One of our favorite things to do with kids (or anyone) is the stargazing course offered on the roof.
