McCaffery House Bed and Breakfast Inn Twain Harte Gold Country California CAChecking into the McCaffrey House Bed & Breakfast Inn will take longer than you think because as soon as you meet Stephanie, the instantly-likable innkeeper, you’ll want to talk with her all evening—she’s a hoot, and my favorite innkeeper in the Gold Country.

She and her husband Michael run one of the best B&Bs in the Gold Country—the kind of place you come back to year after year. Located in the Stanislaus National Forest, this gorgeous, sprawling three-story country home was built specifically as a B&B, and it’s one of the top 10 in the Gold Country.

Each of the eight immaculate guest rooms has its own bath with a shower and tub, a hair dryer, an individually controlled thermostat, access to a library of 400 movies, a private phone, and wireless Internet. All but two units have private decks.

But it’s the details that make the difference: a nearby creek to lull you to sleep, a forest view from your deck, queen-size quilts handmade by the Amish of Pennsylvania, a black iron stove in every room, exceptional gallery-quality art adorning the walls, TVs with VCRs stored in pine wood armoires, a library of paperbacks, an outdoor hot tub perfectly situated to watch the full moon passing overhead—and more.

In the summer, breakfast and hors d’oeuvres, wine, and sparkling cider are served on the huge redwood deck, which surrounds the house and overlooks the verdant hollow.
